Overview

athenahealth is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the athenaCollector team, focused on Billing Workflows. This is a hybrid role based in Boston, MA, reporting to the Senior Manager. The engineer will design and build scalable, secure, and maintainable software that powers revenue cycle management features.

Team Summary

The athenaCollector team builds technology solutions that automate Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). The team focuses on implementing medical back-office processes that automate and integrate claims cycle requirements. Work includes services and user experiences that directly impact claims processing, billing, and client operations.

Key team activities include:

• •Reducing manual work through automation
• •Improving system observability and reliability
• •Delivering features that drive measurable business outcomes for provider clients
• •Collaborating with product managers, QA, SRE, and other engineering teams
• •Participating in design discussions, code reviews, and delivery planning
• •Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical roadmaps

Essential Responsibilities

• •Build software collaboratively on an Agile team including engineers, a scrum master, product owner, architect, and experience designer
• •Own work end to end and coordinate across teams to hit shared goals
• •Build deep domain expertise in claims and RCM and share knowledge with engineering and product
• •Work spec-first: turn clear specifications and acceptance criteria into well-tested, reviewable changes, and push for sharp requirements upstream
• •Use AI-assisted coding tools for code generation, review, and test authoring while owning correctness, security, and maintainability
• •Give and take fast, high-quality code reviews with human attention focused on design, edge cases, and domain correctness
• •Prototype LLM-assisted features and help define safe, usable ways to apply AI to developer productivity and client outcomes
• •Contribute to agile ceremonies and continuous improvement of team processes

Additional Responsibilities

• •Support integration and deployment activities using AWS EC2, Docker, and Kubernetes
• •Assist in infrastructure automation efforts using Terraform or similar tools
• •Explore and apply technologies such as GraphQL and Cadence to enhance product capabilities
• •Contribute to testing strategies including unit and integration testing
• •Participate in knowledge sharing and team learning initiatives
• •Monitor application performance and assist in troubleshooting issues
• •Stay informed about emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to healthcare software

Qualifications

• •Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• •4+ years of engineering experience in a product development organization
• •Solid experience developing backend services in Java and Spring Boot
• •Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS EC2, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GraphQL, and Camunda or similar technologies is desirable
• •Hands-on experience with ReactJS is a plus
• •Experience working in Agile development environments

Compensation

Base salary range: $119,000 - $203,000. Total compensation includes an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans depending on role eligibility.
