Job Description
Lead Software Engineer role for an NBA-related organization, responsible for designing and managing a critical orchestration platform that handles complex, long-running digital member journeys. The position combines hands-on technical development with leadership of a small engineering pod, focusing on workflow orchestration using Temporal, Node.js, TypeScript, and Kafka. Requires 6+ years of full-stack engineering experience with 1-2+ years in technical leadership, strong distributed systems knowledge, and expertise in event-driven architecture and reliable message delivery patterns.
Overview
This is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for a critical orchestration platform that manages complex, long-running digital member journeys. You will own the systems that move decisions from generation through activation, delivery, acknowledgment, and reconciliation at enterprise scale. Working primarily with Node.js, TypeScript, Temporal, Kafka, and cloud-native technologies, you will solve challenging distributed-systems problems. The role combines architecture, software development, reliability engineering, and leadership of a small engineering pod.
Responsibilities
•Lead end-to-end pod delivery: own planning, execution, quality, technical outcomes, and timely delivery for the orchestration engineering pod.
•Design and build durable, long-running workflows using Temporal and Node.js/TypeScript to manage member action lifecycles, state transitions, scheduling, activation, and delivery outcomes.
•Own the complete action delivery pipeline from decision publication through activation, acknowledgment, and state reconciliation, including Transactional Outbox patterns, idempotency, retries, backoff strategies, dead-letter queues, and receipt processing.
•Build and maintain integrations with activation and engagement platforms and Kafka-based downstream systems while defining reliable delivery contracts and receipt-ingestion patterns.
•Write production code across Temporal workflows and activities, Node.js services, Kafka producers and consumers, outbox processors, and integration services.
•Drive architectural decisions covering workflow and state-machine design, compensation strategies, topic structures, schema evolution, API contracts, and delivery guarantees.
•Build for correctness in asynchronous environments through durable state management, deduplication, idempotent processing, safe retries, and graceful failure recovery.
•Implement monitoring, tracing, alerting, and operational visibility across workflows, event publication, activation, and delivery acknowledgment.
•Manage and support engineers and contractors, conduct code reviews, maintain engineering standards, and remove delivery blockers.
•Partner with decisioning, platform, activation, and other technology teams to identify integration risks, dependencies, and operational concerns early.
Requirements
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a relevant technical field.
•6+ years of full-stack software engineering experience, including 1-2+ years in a technical leadership or senior lead capacity.
•Strong production experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
•Hands-on experience with durable workflow platforms; Temporal is strongly preferred, with Cadence, AWS Step Functions, or Airflow also relevant.
•Strong understanding of event-driven architecture, asynchronous processing, retries, idempotency, failure recovery, and durable state management.
•Experience designing and implementing production-grade Kafka producer and consumer patterns.
•Experience with Transactional Outbox architectures, event-driven integrations, or comparable reliable messaging patterns.
•Demonstrated ability to lead a small engineering pod and take ownership of technical delivery and outcomes.
•Experience operating cloud-native applications on Azure or comparable infrastructure using Kubernetes, containers, and CI/CD pipelines.
•Ability to clearly communicate architecture, delivery progress, operational risks, dependencies, and technical trade-offs to both technical and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
•Experience with Temporal at scale, including workflow versioning and long-running workflow operations.
•Deep knowledge of delivery acknowledgments, dead-letter queues, receipt reconciliation, and exactly-once business-processing semantics.
•Familiarity with Adobe Experience Platform or similar engagement platforms.
•Experience with Kafka ecosystem tooling and event schema governance.
•Experience with Helm, Terraform, Kubernetes, React/TypeScript, Java services, and decision-intelligence systems.
•Experience in healthcare, insurance, or another regulated environment involving sensitive information, auditability, and compliance.
Compensation and Benefits
•Base salary: $129,300 to $177,800 per year, depending on location, qualifications, and experience.
•Eligibility for a bonus incentive plan based on company and/or individual performance.
•Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
•401(k) retirement savings plan.
•Paid time off, company and personal holidays, and paid parental and caregiver leave.
•Short-term and long-term disability coverage and life insurance.
•Remote work opportunity with a typical Monday through Friday schedule of 40 hours per week.
•Occasional travel may be required for training, meetings, or conferences.
