Job Description
Lead Software Engineer (Fullstack) contract role focused on architecting and delivering complex full-stack software solutions. The position combines deep engineering expertise with technical leadership, requiring hands-on involvement in frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps across multiple client engagements. Responsibilities include technical architecture, code quality standards, mentoring, and client-facing leadership. Initial engagement centers on Java and Dropwizard, with exposure to React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, and Azure.
Overview
This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on architecting and delivering complex, full-stack software solutions for demanding client environments. You will guide multiple engagements from technical discovery and architecture through implementation, deployment, and ongoing support. The role combines deep engineering expertise with client-facing leadership, requiring you to communicate technical decisions and business tradeoffs with confidence.
The initial engagement centers on Java and Dropwizard, but the broader environment spans React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, Azure, and modern infrastructure tooling. This opportunity is designed for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems, leading through complexity, and remaining deeply involved in production code.
Responsibilities
•Serve as the key technical architect across multiple client engagements, ensuring technology strategies align with customer objectives and measurable business outcomes.
•Lead architecture and technical design across frontend, backend, APIs, cloud infrastructure, event-driven systems, data platforms, and user-facing applications.
•Own technical delivery from discovery and planning through development, testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.
•Write and review production-quality code while establishing strong standards for maintainability, scalability, security, testing, and performance.
•Become productive quickly in existing Java and Dropwizard codebases and contribute directly to the initial client engagement.
•Collaborate across software engineering, hardware, data science, design, product, and client teams to deliver end-to-end connected and intelligent solutions.
•Establish and improve engineering practices around automated testing, CI/CD, source control, code reviews, deployment, monitoring, logging, and observability.
•Design and support cloud-native systems across AWS and Azure, including infrastructure, security, performance, reliability, and operational tooling.
•Identify architectural, technical, and delivery risks early, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and implement practical mitigation strategies.
•Partner with product managers and technical leads to translate client requirements into actionable technical plans and deliverables.
•Support pre-sales activities as a solutions engineering partner by contributing to technical scoping, estimation, solution design, and Statements of Work.
•Mentor and guide engineers through development, code reviews, production troubleshooting, and on-call responsibilities.
•Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, knowledge sharing, and the continued development of engineering talent.
•Represent the technical organization in client meetings and industry engagements as a trusted subject-matter expert.
•Lead concurrent client programs toward successful, on-time delivery while maintaining strong client satisfaction and engineering standards.
Requirements
•Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
•10+ years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on full-stack engineering experience.
•3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing cross-functional engineering teams or complex software initiatives.
•Strong backend development expertise using Java or another modern object-oriented language, with production Java experience preferred.
•Ability to become productive quickly in Java and Dropwizard for the initial engagement.
•Strong frontend development experience with React, TypeScript, Vite, and/or Expo.
•Proven experience delivering full-stack systems from concept through production and supporting public-facing applications at scale.
•Deep knowledge of backend frameworks such as Dropwizard, Spring Boot, Django, FastAPI, or comparable production technologies.
•Experience designing and supporting event-driven architectures, APIs, cloud platforms, and distributed systems.
•Strong experience with AWS and Azure, including Lambda, ECS, Fargate, RDS, CloudFront, CloudWatch, SNS, and SQS.
•Experience with relational and non-relational databases and data modeling.
•Highly proficient in CI/CD automation and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, or Pulumi.
•Strong understanding of security, logging, monitoring, observability, performance, and reliability in cloud-native environments.
•Experience with Docker, automated testing, Git, and modern source code management platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket.
•Strong client-facing communication and executive presentation skills.
•Professional services or consulting experience is strongly preferred.
•Must reside in the United States and be a U.S. citizen authorized to work without sponsorship.
•A valid, publicly accessible personal LinkedIn profile with a photo is required.
Compensation and Benefits
•Contract compensation of $100 USD per hour, commensurate with experience.
•Fully remote work within the United States.
•Flexible work environment designed for distributed teams.
•Significant technical ownership and opportunities to influence architecture, engineering standards, and delivery practices.
•Exposure to a modern polyglot technology environment spanning Java, React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, Azure, Docker, Terraform, Pulumi, and CI/CD.
•Opportunities to mentor engineers, contribute to technical leadership, and support client-facing solution development.
•Contract engagement structured as a 1099 role, with scope potentially approximating a full-time workload.
•Client travel may be required up to approximately 10% of the time, and some engagements may include participation in a 24/7 support rotation.
